The Within Collection

The Within series began with a simple idea: the places we inhabit often become part of us.

The three works in the series, Wilderness Within, Tide Within, and City Within, each combine a human figure with a different environment: forest, ocean, and city.

I was interested in the way each setting carries its own emotional language. The woods can suggest solitude and retreat. The ocean can feel restless, expansive, or deeply emotional. A city can be crowded and loud while still containing moments of profound isolation.

Rather than treating the landscape as a backdrop, I wanted it to become part of the figure itself. The person and place begin to blur together, suggesting that the environments we move through leave traces behind.

Creating the series felt unexpectedly introspective. What began as an experiment in combining portraiture and landscape gradually became a small meditation on memory, identity, and the places we carry with us.
